ANTE NATAL - VOMITTING IN PREGNANCY

Description

  • Vomiting in pregnancy can manifest as an outcome of pregnancy or as an outcome of an underlying medical or surgical disorders. Nausea and vomiting in pregnancy, commonly known as morning sickness affects approximately 75-85 % of pregnant women. It is generally mild, self-limited condition, commonly encountered between 4th and 7th week of pregnancy, diminishing greatly in intensity by 14-16 weeks of pregnancy. Hyperemesis gravidarum is a syndrome defined as severe nausea and vomiting in early pregnancy associated with weight loss of more than 5% during early pregnancy.

Etiology

  • Common in GTD
  • Multiple pregnancy
  • Positive family history
  • Relaxation of gastrointestinal muscles occurring as a result of hormones such as estrogen and relaxin
  • Possible role of the bacteria such as, helicobacter pylori
  • HG may be caused by high serum HCG and Estradiol concentrations.

Investigation

  • Serum electrolytes
  • Urine for ketone bodies
  • Thyroid function test

Treatments

  • Chewing a piece of dry food before getting out of bed
  • Avoiding fatty and spicy food
  • Consuming five portions of fresh food and vegetables and drinking eight glasses of water daily
  • Eating small meals multiple times a day
  • Eating protein rich snack at bed time
  • Emotional and psychological support
