Calcaneal spur is a bony projection forwards from the undersurface of the calcaneal tuberosity. It is nothing but the ossification of the plantar fascia at its calcaneal end
Heal spurs are common and do not always cause pain, pain is caused by contact of the spur with the surrounding soft tissue
Patients (usually middle-aged adults) frequently complain of pain behind or below the heels which increases in intensity after prolonged periods of rest
Classification:
Inferior calcaneal spur – located in the inferior aspect of calcaneum, typically a response to plantar fasciitis over a period
Posterior calcaneal spur – develops on the back of the heel at the insertion of achilles tendon
Types
Pain in the heel typically increase in intensity after prolonged periods of rest
Nature of pain –Described as a sharp knife or pin sticking to the bottom of the foot
Not able to bear weight in afflicted heel comfortably
Running, walking or lifting heavy weight may exacerbate the issue
Pain may be due to inflammation of the soft tissue or bursa beneath the spur also
Investigation
X-ray – Foot lateral view , reveals bony projection from the surface of the calcaneum
