CYSTOID MACULAR EDEMA
Description
- Cystoid Macular Oedema refers to collection of fluid in the outer plexiform (Henle's layer) and the inner nuclear layer of the retina, centred around the foveola
- It might be asymptomatic in several cases and diagnosed during a routine eye check-up
Etiology
- Complication of ocular treatment such as Ocular surgery, Ocular laser therapy
- Retinal vascular disorders
- Intraocular inflammations
- Systemic diseases such as leukaemia, chronic renal failure and multiple myeloma
Types
- Visual loss
- A patient with painless Blurred or decreased central vision can be a case of Cystoid macular oedema
- Asymptomatic in several cases
Investigation
- Visual acuity - Decreased
- Ophthalmoscopy-reveals loss of foveal contour, retinal thickening, a yellow spot at the centre of the fovea and in clinically established cases a typical ‘Honeycomb appearance’ of the macula
- Fundus Fluorescein Angiography- Demonstrates leakage and accumulation of dye in a ‘flower-petal appearance
- Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) –reveals loss of foveal depression
Treatments
- Treatment of the causative factor
- Topical and systemic steroids
- Topical anti prostaglandin
- Lifestyle modifications such as proper sleep, avoid stress etc as these are the key factors
