HERPES GENITALIS
Description
- A sexually transmitted infection caused by Herpes simplex virus (HSV)
- Characterized by the formation of fluid-filled blisters on the genital organs
- After the initial infection, the virus lies dormant in the body and can reactivate several times a year
- If infected, it can be contagious even if there are no visible sores
Etiology
- Causative organism: Herpes simplex virus 1 and 2
- Most common viral STD
- HSV-1 -usually causes cold sores or fever, blisters around the mouth. HSV-1 often spreads through skin-to-skin contact. Recurrences are much less frequent than they are with HSV-2 infection
- HSV-2 - commonly causes genital herpes. The virus spreads through sexual contact and skin-to-skin contact. HSV-2 is very common and highly contagious
- Incubation period : 2 – 14 days
Types
- Genitals – Redness, swelling, tingling, pain, pruritus
- Pain or itching that begins after exposure from an infected sexual partner
- Small red bumps or tiny white blisters
- Ulcers are formed when blisters rupture
- Scabs develop as the ulcers heal
- Fever, malaise, and headache
Investigation
- Blood test
- Virus tissue culture and isolation
- ELISA or Immuno-fluorescent method
- PCR test (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
Treatments
- Acyclovir, Valacyclovir
- Rest and analgesics
- Antibiotics for bacterial superinfection
