MENOPAUSAL SYNDROME

Description

  • Menopause is the permanent cessation of menstruation at the end of reproductive life due to the loss of ovarian follicular activity
  • Menopausal syndrome includes symptoms associated with the physiological changes that take place in a women’s body as the period of fertility ends
  • The age of menopause ranges between 45-55 yrs, the average being 50 yrs

Etiology

  • Reduced production of oestrogen and progesterone
  • Less active ovaries
  • It is a natural and normal phenomenon of ageing. Reduced production of sex hormones due to less active ovaries leads to menopause

Types

  • Irregular periods with scanty or excessive bleeding
  • Hot flushes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness and itching
  • Mood swings
  • Joint pain
  • Oedema
  • Insomnia, anxiety, irritability, dysphasia, depression
  • Excessive hair fall
  • Anaemia and weakness
  • Stress incontinence 
  • Loss of sexual desire
  • Breast tissue atrophy

Complications

  • Risk of ischaemic heart disease, coronary artery disease, and strokes
  • Fractures due to osteoporosis

Investigation

  • Haemogram
  • Pap smear
  • Serum FSH, LH, and Estradiol levels
  • USG abdomen 
  • Bone mineral densitometry
  • Mammogram

Treatments

  • Treatment is required only if symptoms are severe or affecting the quality of life

Non-hormonal treatment

  • Lifestyle modification
  • Nutritious diet
  • Supplementary calcium (1-1.5gm/day)
  • Exercise
  • Vitamin D3 supplementation (1500-2000 IU/day)

 Hormonal therapy 

  • Oral oestrogen regime
  • Oestrogen and cyclic progestin
  • Subdermal implants
  • Percutaneous oestrogen gel 

 Ayurvedic Treatment

Ahara

  • Food containing phytoestrogens like Rice, Wheat, Oats, Flax Seeds
  • Potato, Legumes, Soyabean, Peas, and Nuts

Vihara

  • Atapasevana, Regular exercise, Maintain a normal weight, Avoid stress and strain, Practice Yogasanas
