- Phospholipids are structural components of cell membrane and play a crucial role in blood clotting and are critical to platelet function in addition to various coagulation cofactors. When antiphospholipid antibodies are produced, they interfere with the clotting process. They Increase an affected persons risk of developing recurrent thrombi in arteries and veins which can lead to strokes, heart attacks and/or miscarriages
- Antiphospholipid antibodies are also associated with low platelet counts and risk of recurrent miscarriages, premature labour and preeclampsia
- Antiphospholipid antibody testing is used to determine the cause of inappropriate blood clot, Recurrent miscarriage, Thrombocytopenia, Prolonged PTT test
When to get tested
- When there is s/s suggestive of a blood clot (pain & swelling in the extremities, shortness of breath, headaches)
- When a woman has had recurrent miscarriages
- As a follow up to a prolonged PTT test
