Phosphocreatine, an energy storing molecule in the muscle , undergoes spontaneous cyclization to form creatine and inorganic phosphorous . Creatine then decomposes to creatinine.

When to get Tested
When there is s/s of Kidney dysfunction (Fatigue, lack of concentration , poor appetite, puffiness around the eyes or in the face, wrists, abdomen, thighs or ankles, coffee coloured urine , decrease in the amount of Urine, high Blood pressure )

- Impaired renal function
- Chronic nephritis
- Urinary tract obstruction
- Diseases such as gigantism, Acromegaly, and myasthenia gravis
- Acute tubular necrosis
- Dehydration
- Diabetic nephropathy
- Eclampsia
- Glomerulonephritis
- Muscular dystrophy
- Pre-eclampsia
- Pyelonephritis
- Reduced renal blood flow (shock, congestive heart failure)
- Rhabdomyolysis
