GLUCOSE
Description
0 to 0.8 mmol/L
Clinical significance
- Glucose is not normally present in urine. When glucose is present the condition is called Glucosuria which is usually a sign of very high blood sugar levels. The extra sugar in the bloodstream is usually only removed via the kidneys. Glycosuria is a common symptom of both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes.
- A reduction in the Renal threshold can also lead to glucosuria. When blood glucose levels reach a certain concentration, the kidneys eliminate glucose into urine to decrease blood concentrations. Sometimes the threshold concentration is reduced and glucose enters the urine at a lower blood glucose concentration
