Clinical significance
- Human Growth Hormone (HGH ) is the most abundant hormone produced by the Pituitary Gland. It is a very complex hormone and it is the largest protein produced by the pituitary gland.
- HGH secretion reaches its peak in the body during adolescence. It helps to stimulate our body to grow, but HGH secretion does not stop after adolescence. Our body continue to produce HGH usually in short bursts during deep sleep.
- HGH helps in the conversion of body fat to muscle mass , Growth of all tissues , Tissue repair, Brain function , Sexual Function , enzyme production , integrity of hair , nails, skin and vital organs. GH promotes protein conservation and engages wide range of mechanism for protein synthesis. It also enhances glucose transport and facilitates the build up of glycogen stores.
- HGH is evaluated in differential diagnosis of Short stature , slow growth , in evaluation of pituitary function and in evaluation of a case of Gigantism / Acromegaly
