Types

• A normal result is 4 Red blood cells per high power field (RBC/HPF) or less when the sample is examined under a microscope. Some causes of haematuria are benign temporary states. If there is blood in the urine along with white blood cells and bacteria, it may be caused by a urinary tract infection

• Normally very few or no red cells are seen

When to get Tested

• As part of a routine urine analysis
• Typically done when there are abnormal findings on the physical or chemical examination

Elevated Level

• Kidney/bladder injury
• Stones (kidney, bladder)
• UTI
• Glomerulonephritis
• Pyelonephritis
• Polycystic kidney disease
• Renal cell carcinoma
• Tumours/malignancies (prostate, ureteral, bladder)
• Infections (pyelonephritis, cystitis, prostatitis, urethritis )
