Clinical significance
- Specific gravity is a measure of the concentration of solutes in the urine and provides information on the ability of kidneys to concentrate urine
- Commonly used in the evaluation of kidney function and can aid in the diagnosis of various renal diseases. The concentration of the excreted molecules determines the urine's specific gravity.
When to get tested
- When there is a complicated urinary tract infection( pyelonephritis)
- When there is s/s of Hypernatremia, Hyponatremia
- When there is Polyuria
Elevated level
Hypersthenuria
- Volume loss (dehydration, diarrhoea, emesis, excessive sweating)
- UTI
- Glucosuria
- Renal artery stenosis
- Hepatorenal syndrome
- Decreased blood flow to the kidney
- Shock
- Excess of antidiuretic hormone caused by the syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion
Decreased level
Hyposthenuria
- Renal failure
- Pyelonephritis
- Diabetes insipidus
- Acute tubular necrosis
- Intestinal nephritis
- Excessive fluid intake (e.g., psychogenic polydypsia)
