- Normal range & Test Units : 200-910 pg/ml
Clinical significance
- Vitamin B12 is necessary for the synthesis of red blood cells, maintenance of nervous system, and growth and development in children. Deficiency can cause Vit B12 neuropathy
- B12 is necessary for the rapid synthesis of DNA during cell division, especially where cells are dividing rapidly, particularly bone marrow tissues responsible for red blood cell formation .If B12 is deficiency occurs DNA production is disrupted and abnormal cells called megaloblasts occur. This results in anaemia.
- It contains cobalt, and so is also known as cobalamin.
When to get tested
- When there is s/s of Neuropathy ( Tingling, Numbness, burning in feet, hands, arms and legs)
- When there is s/s of deficiency ( Diarrhoea, Dizziness, fatigue , Sore tongue , Shortness of breath , Rapid heart rate , Confusion , Irritability )
Elevated level
- Myeloproliferative disorders, leukemias
- Leukocytosis
- Some cancers especially with liver metastasis
- Liver disorders like hepatitis ,cirrhosis
- Ingestion of vitamin A,C ,estrogen anticonvulsants
- Uremia
Decreased level
- Pernicious anaemia
- Gastro intestinal disorders ( Sprue , Celiac disease )
- Inflammatory bowel disease( Crohns , Ulcerative colitis)
- Pancreatic Insufficiency
