Clinical significance

  • Very Low Density Lipoprotein is one of the four major lipoprotein. The other three are HDL, LDL and chylomicrons . LDL contains the highest amount of cholesterol, HDL contains the highest amount of protein, VLDL and Chylomicrons contains the highest amount of Triglycerides. 
  • VLDL plays an important role in the formation of plaques in the walls of arteries. VLDL ultimately gets converted to triglyceride. When levels of VLDL are high , conversion of VLDL to LDL is slowed and leads to development of Atherosclerosis

When to get tested

  • As a screening test for adults with no risk factors for heart disease
  • When a person has one or more risk factors for heart disease( Cigarette smoking, Being overweight or Obese, Old age , Pre existing heart disease, Diabetes)

Elevated level

  • Increased risk of Atherosclerotic disease 
  • Familial Hyper lipo proteinemia
