WBCs

Description

  • Normally very few or no white cells are seen

Clinical significance

  • The number of WBCs in urine sediment is normally low (0-5 WBCs per high power field, HPF). An increased number of WBCs seen in the urine under a microscope and/or positive test for leukocyte esterase may indicate an infection or inflammation in the urinary tract
  • Typically most of the WBCs found are neutrophils. Urinary eosinophils and lymphocytes may also be found. Urinary eosinophils may help diagnose acute interstitial nephritis. Urinary lymphocytes are often associated with tubule interstitial diseases

When to get tested

  • As part of a routine urine analysis
  • Typically done when there are abnormal findings on the physical or chemical examination

Elevated level

  • UTI
  • Tumour
  • Inflammation of the kidneys

Decreased level
