ANTE NATAL - ANAEMIA IN PREGNANCY
Description
- WHO defines anaemia as presence of haemoglobin of less than 11 gm/dL and haemocrit of less than 0.33gm/dL
- Centre of disease control (CDC) have defined anaemia as Hb levels below 11 gm/dL in the pregnant women in first and third trimester and less than 10.5 gm/dL in second trimester
Etiology
- Nutritional causes like Iron deficiency, folic acid deficiency, vitamin B12 deficiency and protein deficiency
- Anaemia due to blood loss
- Hook worm infestation
- Bleeding piles
- Malarial infestation
- TB
- Aplastic anaemia

Investigation
- RBC
- PCV
- MCV
- Urine examination to rule out haematuria, CKD
- Stool examination to rule out parasitic infestation
- Blood urea nitrogen/serum creatine to rule out renal diseases
Treatments
- Supplementation through diet
- Oral iron therapy
- Parentral therapy if Hb less than 5-8 g/dL
- Folic acid therapy
- Vitamin B12 therapy
- Blood transfusion
