ANTE NATAL - OEDEMA IN PREGNANCY

Description

  • Fluid present in the subcutaneous tissue is called oedema
  • In pregnancy physiological pedal edema is very common around 24 weeks
  • It resolves on its own without any treatment soon after delivery

Etiology

  • It is mainly due to the reduced venous return caused by mechanical obstruction to inferior vena cava and common iliac veins by gravid uterus

Types

  • Pedal oedema
  • Rarely associated with pain, night cramps, feeling of heaviness or discomfort.

Investigation

  • BP monitoring
  • Urine routine to rule out proteinuria
  • Renal function tests

Treatments

  • Check, whether it is physiological or pathological
  • Physiological oedema relieves with rest
  • Check BP and proteinuria regularly to exclude preeclampsia
