Chalazion, also called a tarsal or meibomian cyst, is a chronic non-infective (non-suppurative) lipogranulomatous inflammation of the meibomian gland primarily caused by obstruction of the glands
A chalazion mimics a stye for the first few days and then turns into a painless hard, round bump later on
Types
Symptoms
Painless swelling (chronic, firm, rubbery nodule) in the eyelid, gradually increasing in size
Mild heaviness in the lid may be felt with moderately large chalazion
Blurred vision
Watering (epiphora)
Signs
The nodule is noted slightly away from the lid margin which is firm to hard and non-tender on palpation
Investigation
Usually a clinical diagnosis is made
Local examination of eye -Painless swelling in the eyelid
Biopsy : for a persistent or recurrent chalazion - may indicate an underlying carcinoma of the eyelid
Treatments
Conservative treatment - Hot fomentation, topical antibiotic eye drops and oral anti-inflammatory drugs

Advice to avoid frequent rubbing of eyes, intake of oily food etc
