CHLAMYDIAL INFECTIONS
Description
- Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted disease (STD) caused by infection with Chlamydia trachomatis
- Most prevalent STD. Known as a ‘silent’ disease because, although it often has no outward symptoms, it can cause major internal damage
- Can cause cervicitis in women and urethritis and proctitis in both men and women
- Chlamydial infections in women can lead to serious consequences including pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), tubal factor infertility, ectopic pregnancy, and chronic pelvic pain
Etiology
- Causative organism: Chlamydia trachomatis
- Incubation period: 6-14 days
- Largely under-reported as infected persons are asymptomatic
- Transmission is by sexual contact with an infected person
- Can also be passed to a child during vaginal childbirth
Types
- The majority of infected individuals are asymptomatic
- Even when signs and symptoms occur, they're often mild
Symptoms
- Vaginal discharge (white/grey)
- Burning micturition
- Lower abdominal pain
- Inter-menstrual bleeding
- Post-coital bleeding
- Low-grade fever
- Possible dysuria, polyuria, dyspareunia
Investigation
- NAAT – gold standard
- PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction)
- Serology -ELISA technique, CF
- Tissue culture
Treatments
- Antibiotics – A single dose of Azithromycin or a week of Doxycycline is most commonly used
- Abstain from intercourse
