EXTERNAL HORDEOLUM
Description
- It is a common acute suppurative inflammation of lash follicle and its associated glands of Zeis or Moll
- Red, swollen lumps that form along the edge of the eyelid, close to the lashes, usually affecting unilaterally at a time may be a stye
Etiology
Causative organism commonly involved is staphylococcus aureus and rarely streptococcus
Predisposing factors:
- Age: common in children and young adults
- Habitual rubbing of the eyes
- Metabolic factors
- Chronic debility
- Excessive intake of carbohydrates and alcohol
Types
Symptoms
- Acute pain associated with swelling of the lid
- Mild watering
- Photophobia
Signs
- Stage of cellulitis is characterised by localised, firm, red, tender swelling at the lid margin associated with marked oedema
- Stage of abscess formation is characterised by a visible pus point on the lid margin about the affected cilia.
Investigation
- Usually a clinical diagnosis is made
- Local examination of the eye -localised, firm, red, tender swelling at the lid margin associated with marked oedema
Treatments
- Hot compresses
- Surgical incision
- Antibiotic eye drops
- Systemic anti-inflammatory and analgesics
Ayurvedic Treatment
- Treatment for the cause to avoid recurrence – e.g. a refractive error
- Advice to avoid frequent rubbing of eyes, intake of oily food etc

- Patoladi kashaya
- Guggulu panchapala choorna
- Amrutarishta
- Punarnavasava

- Local mild Fomentation with Sigru leaves or Tamarind leaves
- Purambada (Bidalaka) with Mukkadigulika +Honey/ milk – in swelling
- Incision and drainage- When Pus point is seen
- Kshalana with Triphala kashaya
- Aschotana - Durva gritha + honey
- Pad and Bandage 1 day
