FIBROADENOMA
Description
- Benign oestrogen dependant breast tumour composed of fibrous and glandular tissue that is usually found in premenopausal women
- Fibroadenoma is the most common benign tumour of the breast
- It forms from the proliferation of epithelial and mesenchymal elements and stroma
- Peak incidence is between 15 and 35 yrs of age
- It is symptomless, being accidentally discovered by self-palpation
Etiology
- Unknown, but they might be related to reproductive hormones
- It occurs more often during reproductive years, can become bigger during pregnancy or with the use of hormone therapy, and might shrink after menopause
Types
- Painless swelling
- Smooth, firm, non-tender mass – commonly bilateral
- Well-defined
- Moves freely within the breast tissue – ‘breast mouse
- Axillary lymph nodes – not enlarged
- Fibroadenoma with size >5 cm is known as a giant fibroadenoma

Treatments
- No treatment is necessary unless rapidly growing or symptomatic
- Surgical excision and biopsy is indicated only when the mass enlarges
- Ultrasound-guided cryoablation
