PITYRIASIS ALBA
Description
- Pityriasis alba is a common disorder in children that is characterized by an asymptomatic, hypo pigmented, slightly elevated, fine, scaling plaque with indistinct borders
- It usually disappears by adulthood
- The condition commonly affects the face
- It is more common in children with atopic dermatitis
Etiology
- Exact cause is unknown, commonly considered as a type of eczema
Types
- Ill defined hypo pigmented, macules or patches are found typically over the face and, at times, the neck and shoulders. These are preceded by an erythematous stage which is overlooked by most patients
- Lesions are more visible over dark skin, hence some patients may complain of a summer exacerbation due to tanning of surrounding skin
Differential Diagnosis
- Intermediate leprosy : solitary or few lesions, hypopigmented macule with ill defined margins and sensory loss
- Tinea versicolor : well defined hypopigmented macules
- Mycosis fungoides
Investigation
- Clinical diagnosis is made
Treatments
- Usually self limited and asymptomatic
