ANDROSTENEDIONE (A4)

Description

Adult Males :

  • 0.57 – 2.65 ng/ml

Adult Females :

  • 0.47 -2.68 ng/ml

Clinical significance

  • Androstenedione is a steroid produced in the adrenal gland and gonads. Androstenedione is an immediate precursor to both testosterone and estrone; subsequently both are converted to estradiol
  • Androstenedione are high in foetal and neonatal serum, decreases during childhood and increases during puberty. The conversion of androstenedione to testosterone is a process activated by LH and thus controlled by the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland
  • Measurement of A4 provides a useful marker of androgen biosynthesis and A4 levels may have all advantage over measurement of 17-OH Progesterone in monitoring treatment in Virilizing Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH)
