ANTI HBs TOTAL Anti hepatitis B Surface Antigen total antibody

Description

OD Ratio

  • Negative : <10.0
  • Positive : ≥10.0

Clinical significance

  • The first marker to appear during the incubation phase is HBsAg and indicates an ongoing infection with HBV. Antibodies with HbsAg generally appear after HbsAg has been cleared from the blood stream usually 6 months after infection and its presence indicates recovery and immunity
  • In chronic carriers no antibody is present
  • Presence of titre of >10ml U/ml without any detectable levels of HbsAg indicates the presence of infectivity, immunity from future HBV infection, immunisation not required
  • In fulminant hepatitis antibodies are produced early and may co-exist with low antigen titre
  • To show efficacy of immunization program the test is done. It appears in 90% of healthy adults after three doses of immunization. A booster dose may be required after 5 years to develop antibodies again.
  • A result of greater than or equal to 10mlU/ml indicates that antibody to HbsAg are present. In vaccinated individuals this usually indicates protection against infection
