Clinical significance
- Thyroid Auto antibodies are antibodies that develop when a person’s immune system mistakenly targets Thyroid gland or Thyroid proteins leading to chronic inflammation of the Thyroid, tissue damage and or disruption of thyroid function. Thyroid antibody tests include a)Thyroid peroxidase antibody(TPO) also known as Antimicrosomal Antibodies(AMA), b)Thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb), c)Thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibodies including thyroid stimulating immunoglobulin (TSI) and thyroid binding inhibitory immunoglobulin(TBII)
- Thyroid peroxidase antibody is present in Hashimoto Thyroiditis, Graves’ disease. Thyroglobulin antibody is present in Thyroid Cancer, Hashimoto Thyroiditis and Thyroid stimulating hormone receptor antibodies is present in Graves disease
- Anti-microsomal antibodies is Positive in autoimmune disorders like hashimoto’s thyroiditis & grave’s disease , It is used to predict post-partum thyroid dysfunction due to thyroiditis, and to distinguish sub acute thyroiditis from Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.
When to get tested
- To Diagnose and monitor Auto immune thyroid diseases
- When a person has abnormal TSH and or free T4 test results or presence of Goitre
