Clinical significance

• Anti-streptolysin O is an antibody that appears when a person has Group A Streptococcus bacteria in the blood

• It confirms a recent or ongoing infection with group Streptococcus and determines whether person has Rheumatoid arthritis or Rheumatic fever

• ASO reaction provides useful information for diagnosis and monitoring of human streptococcal infections such as tonsillitis, otitis, erysipelas, scarlet fever or glomerulonephritis. Over 80 % patients with acute rheumatic fever and 95 % of patients with acute glomerulonephritis have elevated titre of ASO.

• ASO antibodies are produced about a week to a month after an initial streptococcal infection.

  • Bactrerial endocarditis
  • Post streptococcal glomerulo nephritis
  • Rheumatic fever
  • Scarlet fever
