Description

• It is the infection of skin and subcutaneous tissue characterized by pain, swelling, and redness. The borders are usually ill defined

Types

• Pain, swelling, redness and peau d’orange appearance of the involved site. It is poorly defined with indurations
• Common location is the lower limb. Superficial bullae, belbs may form. Cellulitis may sometimes spread to involve deeper layers of skin and tissue
• Additional features: Lymphangitis , lymphadenitis, bullae, purulent exudates
• Systemic symptoms : In moderate/ severe infection there will be fever, chills, confusion , nausea, headache, muscle and joint pain
• Erysipelas is one form of streptococcal cellulitis which involves malar area of face and lower extremities, characterised by elevation and bright red appearance of skin

Investigation

• Usually clinical diagnosis is done
• CBC: Leukocytosis
• Inflammatory markers: CRP, Procalcitonin may be elevated
• Soft tissue ultrasound
