Clinical significance

  • Anti insulin antibody test is used to measure the presence of Antibodies against insulin .This test is performed if insulin no longer seems to control diabetes in a patient or if the person have an allergic response to insulin . The test may be used to confirm Insulin Resistance
  • If the test shows elevated values of IgE antibody against Insulin, then the body has developed an allergic response to medication which leads to risk for skin reactions or rarely more widespread reactions.
  • If there is elevated values of IgG & IgM antibody against insulin, the body reacts as if insulin in body is a foreign protein that needs to be removed. This makes insulin less effective or not effective at all ,and as a result blood glucose can be usually high.
  • Presence of free anti insulin antibodies in plasma interferes with the determination of Insulin. And at very high titres, Anti insulin antibodies may induce a state of Insulin resistance
