Clinical significance
- Plasma lipoproteins transport essentially all of the cholesterol and esterified lipids in the blood .
- Four major lipo protein classes are a) Chylomicron b) VLDL c) HDL d) LDL and Minor Lipoproteins are a) Intermediate density lipoprotein b)Lipoprotein (a)
- The protein moiety of lipoprotein is composed of several specific proteins called apolipoproteins. Apolipoproteins play an important role in lipid transport by activating or inhibiting enzymes involved in lipid metabolism, binding lipoproteins to cell surface, lipoprotein receptors or both
- Two major components of Apo A are ApoA1 & ApoA2. Apolipoprotein A1 Constitutes approximately 70 % protein in HDL and 35 % of the total HDL mass.
- Apo A1 serves the function of preventing the accumulation of cholesterol load macrophages, which deposits on arterial wall as foam cells. This is the prominent feature of arteriosclerotic lesion formation ultimately resulting in Atherosclerosis.
- ApoA1 is therefore convenient marker for assessing cholesterol clearing capacity of blood levels. Deficiencies in Apo A1 correlate with an increased risk of developing CVD, especially when HDL levels are low.
When to get tested
- When there is a personal or family history of abnormal lipids and or premature CVD.
- To determine the cause of a person’s high cholesterol
