Description
- Male : 55-140 mg/dl
- Female : 55 -125 mg/dl
Clinical significance
- Apolipoproteins combine with lipids to transport it through the blood stream. An enzyme called lipoprotein lipase removes triglyceride from VLDL to produce Intermediate lipoproteins and then LDL.
- Each VLDL particle contains one molecule of Apo B which is retained as VLDL loses triglycerides and shrinks to become the ore cholesterol rich LDL.
- Apo B is the major protein constituent of LDL and also constitutes about 40 % of VLDL. It is a convenient marker for assessing the cholesterol deposition capacity of the blood. It stabilises the cholesterol within the LDL complex.
When to get tested
- When a person has a family history of heart disease and or high cholesterol and triglycerides (hyperlipidemia).
- To evaluate risk of developing CVD

- High fat diet
- Familial combined hyperlipidemia
- Diabetes
- Hypothyroidism
- Pregnancy
- Drugs such as Androgens , Beta blockers, Diuretics
- Nephrotic syndrome
Decreased level
- Abetalipoproteinemia or Bassen kornzweig syndrome
- Hyperthyroidism
- Malnutrition
- Reyes syndrome
- Surgery
- Cirrhosis
