Clinical significance

  • C- Reactive protein (CRP) is a protein made by the liver.CRP is also produced by cells in the vascular wall such as endothelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and also by adipose tissue.
  • CRP is a non specific indicator of Inflammation and one of the most sensitive acute phase reactants. i.e. CRP is released into the blood within a few hours after an injury, the start of an infection and or other causes of inflammation. It is a general marker of an infection and inflammation.
  • CRP is useful in suspected inflammatory state (Vasculitis, autoimmune disorders, SLE, Psoriasis, infection) and to monitor conditions such as Rheumatoid arthritis and lupus and is often repeated at intervals to determine effectiveness of treatment.

When to get tested

Elevated level

  • Acute or chronic inflammatory conditions
  • Tissue necrosis or tissue injury
  • Ischemia or infarction of tissues
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • Malignant tumours especially of breast, lung and gastrointestinal tract
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Burn
  • Leukemia
  • Hormone replacement therapy
  • Bacterial Infection
  • Arthritis
  • Auto Immune diseases
  • Sepsis in new born
  • CRP levels increases surgery and drops down to normal unless post surgery infection is present.

Decreased level

  • Exercise
  • Weight loss
  • Medications like statins, niacin etc.
  • Low levels are insignificant
