Clinical significance

  • Estrogens are group of steroids responsible for the development and function of reproductive organs and the formation of Secondary sex characteristics in women. Along with progesterone it helps to regulate the menstrual cycle and is involved in the growth of breasts and uterus and help maintain a healthy pregnancy.
  • Though considered as the main sex hormones for women, they are also found in men and helps in bone metabolism and growth in both sexes. Estrogen tests measures one of the three components: Estrone(E1), Estradiol (E2), Estriol(E3)
  • Estradiol (E2) is a steroid hormone, which circulates predominantly protein-bound. It is primarily produced in the ovaries under stimulation of FSH and LH in premenopausal women and in the testicles in men. It is the most potent Estrogen and the one that is present in highest concentration in non pregnant, pre menopausal women.
  • Estradiol is responsible for growth of the uterus, Fallopian tubes and vagina , Promotion of breast development, Maturation of the external genitalia and Deposition of body fat in a female distribution.
  • Estradiol stimulates the proliferation of the endometrium in the first half of the menstrual cycle.lt is very effective for the symptomatic relief of hot flashes, genitourinary symptoms,osteoporosis prophylaxis, psychological well being and reduction of coronary artery disease.
  • This test is used to evaluate ovarian, placental, or adrenal function (particularly when certain types of ovarian tumor are suspected or when there is delayed or abnormal development of male or female body characteristics)
  • It helps in investigation of precocious puberty in girls and gynecomastia in men
  • Helps in differential diagnosis of amenorrhoea and in monitoring of ovulation induction

When to get tested

  • When a woman has symptoms such as vaginal bleeding after menopause or abnormal or lack of menstrual cycle
  • Infertility in woman
  • Symptoms of Menopause including hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia and or irregular or lack of menstrual periods
  • A boy shows signs of feminisation , or delayed puberty in boys

  • Pregnancy
  • Gynecomastia

Decreased level

  • Turner's syndrome
  • Menopause
  • Infection
  • Resistant ovary syndrome
  • Primary hypofunction of ovary
  • Autoimmune oophoritis

  • Mechanical (eg. Trauma, torsion, surgical excision)
