Description

Adults : 2 - 3.5 g/dl

Alpha 1 - 0.1 – 0.3 g/dl

Alpha 2 : 0.6 -1 g/dl

Beta : 0.7 -1.1 g/dl

Clinical significance

  • Globulins are group of proteins in blood. It amounts to 40 % proteins. Globulins are a varied group of proteins, some produced by the liver and some by the Immune system.
  • It plays an important role in liver function, blood clotting and fighting infection. There are five main types of globulins, alpha 1, alpha 2, beta1, beta 2 and gamma

When to get tested

  • When there is s/s like unexplained weight loss, Fatigue, Oedema.
  • When there are symptoms of liver disease, kidney disease, or bone marrow disorder

Elevated level

  • Alpha 1 Increased : Inflammatory stages , Pregnancy
  • Alpha 2 Increased : Inflammatory states , nephritic syndrome , Oral contraceptive use, Steroid use , hyper thyroidism 
  • Beta Increased : Hyper lipidemia , Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Gamma Increased : Polyclonal & Monoclonal Gammopathies

Decreased level

  • Alpha 1 Decreased : Alpha 1 Antitrypsin deficiency
  • Alpha 2 Decreased : Haemolysis , liver disease
  • Beta Decreased: Hypo B Lipo proteinemia , malnutrition
  • Gamma Decreased : Agammaglobulinemia , hypogamma globulinemia
