Clinical significance
- C- Reactive protein (CRP) is one of the first acute phase proteins to become elevated in inflammatory diseases. CRP is present in very low concentration in healthy people . Half life of CRP in circulation is 19 hours and is independent of the plasma concentration and is remarkably constant in all conditions.
- Clinical studies have shown that CRP may be useful in the risk stratification of apparently healthy subjects, and in patients with unstable angina pectoris.
- A persistent low level of Inflammation plays a major role in atherosclerosis associated with CVD. Hs CRP tests accurately measures low levels of CRP to identify persistent levels of inflammation and thus predict a persons risk of developing CVD. Elevated CRP levels predict trouble for patients with known heart diseases
- In Stable angina , usually a mild condition , patients with elevated CRP levels are two times as likely to develop serious cardiac events than similar patients with low levels.
- In Unstable angina, a serious condition elevated CRP levels predict an increased likelihood of having an actual heart attack within three months. Elevated levels are also associated with an increased risk of dying from heart disease , and higher the level , greater the risk .
- In patients who are having heart attacks , angioplasty , elevated CRP levels can predict poor long term results , such as re stenosis (recurrent narrowing of artery) or additional cardiac symptoms .
