Clinical significance

  • Human Leukocyte Antigen B 27 is a major histo compatability complex class 1 molecule that is strongly associated with Ankylosing spondylitis. The test determines the presence or absence of HLAB 27 protein on the surface of a person’s white blood cells.
  • There is a strong association between the presence of HLAB -27 antigen and an increased incidence of Ankylosing spondylitis as well as several other disorders such as Reiters syndrome, Psoriatic arthritis and arthropathies associated with inflammatory bowel disease . These disorders are collectively known as seronegative spondyloarthropathies
  • HLAB 27 positive patient is more likely to exhibit spondyloarthropathies than a HLAB 27 negative patient.

When to get tested

  • When a person has acute or chronic pain and inflammation in the spine , neck , chest , eyes and or joints and when there is a suspicion of Auto immune disorder
  • When there is recurrent Uveitis
  • When there is Suspicion of Ankylosing spondylitis.

  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Reactive Arthritis
  • Other Auto immune disorders
