Description

  • Fasting : <25 mIU/L
  • 30 mins after glucose administration: 30 -230 mIU/L
  • 1 hr after glucose administration: 18- 276 mIU/L
  • 2 hr after glucose administration: 16-166 mIU/L

Clinical significance

  • Insulin is a hormone stored in the beta cells of pancreas and is secreted in response to elevated glucose level following a meal. Insulin helps in the transport of glucose from the blood to within cells, thus helping regulate blood glucose levels.
  • This test measures the amount of insulin in the blood and provides information regarding the presence of insulin resistance 
  • Measurement of Serum insulin is used to diagnose hypoglycemic states and Diabetes mellitus .In case of an islet cell transplant, the insulin level may be monitored to assess viability of the transplant.

When to get tested

  • When there is acute or chronic hypoglycemia (s/s sweating, palpitations, hunger, confusions, blurred vision , fainting and in severe cases seizures and loss of consciousness)
  • When Insulin Resistance is suspected

  • Acromegaly
  • Cushings syndrome 
  • Fructose / galactose intolerance 
  • Injection of exogenous insulin
  • Insulinoma
  • Liver disease
  • Type 2 DM
  • Obesity
  • Pancreatic islet cell lesion
  • Sulfonyl urea induced hypoglycemia
  • Drugs - corticosteroids

Decreased level

  • Hypopituitarism
  • Type1 DM
