Clinical significance
- Semen has a very high buffering capacity, higher than that of most other body fluids. Therefore, the pH of the seminal fluid may play a significant role not only in maintaining the viability and quality of the sperm, but also in ensuring fertilization
When to get tested
- A semen analysis is done when infertility (pregnancy fails to occur within one year of regular unprotected intercourse) is suspected
Elevated level
- Infection
- Dysfunction of one of the accessory glands
Decreased level
- Obstruction of the ejaculatory ducts
- Congenital bilateral absence of the vas
- Blockage of seminal vesicles
