Thyroglobulin is a protein that is normally confined to the thyroid gland. It is synthesized in the follicular cells of the Thyroid gland under the influence of Thyrotropin and represents the precursor to Thyroxine and other iodothyronines. It is an aid in identifying the presence or absence of functioning of thyroid tissue.
When to get Tested
When a person has symptoms of Hyperthyroidism
When there is suspicion of Graves disease or Thyroiditis
Prior to Surgical removal of Thyroid Gland for Cancer and also after completion of treatment to determine
whether any cancerous residual thyroid tissue may be left behind
In patients with Thyroid carcinoma
Moderate to very high thyroglobulin levels are seen in many thyro normal patients also.
In patients with metastases of Thyroid cancer
