Description

  • Normal range& Test Units : 228-428 mg/dl 
  • Paediatric normal range : 281-483 mg/dl

Clinical significance

  • Serum Iron reflects the amount of Iron bound to Transferrin. Serum transferrin represents the maximal amount of Iron that can be bound, which is referred to as Total Iron Binding capacity (TIBC). This is really a measure of transferrin in the serum. 
  • Though TIBC is a reflection of the amount of transferring available, TIBC and transferring are not synonymous. TIBC usually elevated when total body iron stores are low. 

When to get tested

  • When there are s/s of Iron deficiency anaemia( Fatigue, dizziness, Head ache , pallor , weakness)
  • s/s of Iron overload ( Fatigue , joint pain , Weight loss, lack of energy, Abdominal pain , loss of sex drive , organ damage such as in heart and liver)
  • In case of suspected Iron Poisoning

  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Pregnancy (Late)

Decreased level

  • Hypoproteinemia
  • Sickle cell anaemia
  • Inflammation
  • Cirrhosis
  • Haemolytic anaemia
  • Malnutrition
