  • Desirable : <150 mg/dl
  • Borderline high : 150 -199 mg/dl
  • High : 200 -499 mg/dl
  • Very high : >500 mg/dl

Clinical significance

  • Triglycerides are a storage form of lipid found in blood. It is measured as a reflection of fat (lipid) ingestion and metabolism , or as a part of an evaluation of coronary risk factors . 
  • Triglycerides comprise the largest proportion of fats in the diet , in the adipose tissue and in the blood. Triglycerides move via the blood from the gut to adipose tissue for storage .Immediately after a meal triglycerides appear in the blood as the major constituent of chylomicrons.
  • The chylomicron remnant is taken up by the liver so that it disappears from the blood in 2-3 hours . The remaining triglycerides and additional triglycerides synthesized within the liver are then re packaged as VLDL and secreted into the blood from liver

When to get tested

  • To evaluate risk of heart disease in healthy adults 
  • When risk factors for Heart disease has been identified (Cigarette smoking, being overweight or obese, unhealthy diet, Pre existing heart disease, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure)

Elevated level

  • Associated with a higher risk for heart disease and stroke 
  • Cirrhosis
  • Familial hyperlipoproteinemia (rare)
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Low protein in diets and high carbohydrates
  • Poorly controlled diabetes
  • Nephrotic syndrome
  • Pancreatitis
  • Drugs like Cholestyramine, Estrogens and Oral contraceptives, Beta blockers

Decreased level

  • Malabsorption syndrome
  • Malnutrition
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Low fat diet 
  • Drugs - Ascorbic acid, Clofibrate and Colestipol
