URIC ACID

Description

  • Males: 3.6- 7.2 mg/dl
  • Females: 2.3 -6.1 mg/dl

Clinical significance

  • Uric acid is the end product of purine metabolism. Purines are building blocks of RNA and DNA . Most uric acid produced in the body is excreted by Kidneys . An Over production of uric acid occurs when there is an excessive breakdown of cells, which contain purines or the instability of kidneys to excrete uric acid.
  • Uric acid is only slightly soluble in water and may precipitate out of solution contributing to the formation of kidney stones. Uric acid may also form needle like crystals in one or more joints producing excruciating pain of gout.

When to get tested

  • When there is s/s of gout, joint pain especially pain in the toes
  • Cancer Patients undergoing Chemotherapy or Radiotherapy to ensue uric acid levels are not dangerously high
  • When a person suffers from recurrent Renal calculi
